I really enjoyed my stay at Tonmai Suites. Owners are very helpful and friendly. Old Town is quiet and laid back, and it is only a short motor bike... read more ride from the many beaches on the islands western coast. I couldn't recommend this place enough. I will definately be coming back.
My partner and I found this lovely place just walking through Old Town. And it was such a find!. This lovely, boutique hotel was so beautiful --- with a... read more lovely garden to sit in and enjoy. The room was spacious and open. One wall all windows to a wrap around balcony. Everything was well thought out and every detail, from the heavy drapes to the linens, just perfect!.
Jen and Darren, the new management, made the experience even more enjoyable. As hosts, they advise and recommend while also making sure we were happy and comfortable. Yet they appreciated that we really just wanted the peace of the garden, the jungle sounds and our beautiful suite.
Old Town is such a quaint and lovely part of the island. With many small shops and delicious restaurants, we really enjoyed just wandering around and then retreating back to this gem of a little, but special, hotel.
All I have to say is “wowzer”! I have been coming to Koh Lanta for 6 years now but this is the first time I traveled to Old Town. I... read more usually stay in Kantiang. First of all, I was so pleasantly surprised with the town. The shops and restaurants along the main street are about 500 years old and used to be an old Chinese trading post. I also learned that Old Town didn’t get electricity until 1999. If you want to see a really traditional Thai village then this is the place to experience. Now I arrive at the best part. While my friend and I were only planning to make this is a day trip, we decided we wanted to stay a night to enjoy the relaxing vibe in the town. While I was just about to go online to book a place, I stumbled upon Tonmai Suites on a street corner just a 5 minute walking distance from the main drag. First of all, this place is brand spanking new (opened 2 months ago) with a design sensibility that is top rate and a beautiful garden and bungalows in the back. In fact we learned from the very lovely owners (Darren and Jen) that Tonmai translates to “tree” in Thai and the main tree in the garden was shipped all the way from the northern Thai/Laos border. Darren and Jen gave us excellent recommendations for the local cuisine at the nearby restaurants. My friend and I dined on a Thai soft-shell crab dish that was out of this world. In fact we ordered a second round because it was so tasty. Also, Darren and Jen pointed us to a craft beer place in the middle of town that does delicious baguettes and ribs. It was refreshing to taste some really great beer instead of the usual Singha and Leo. Furthermore, they booked us a long tail boat for the next day to see the surrounding islands with beaches all to ourselves. We enjoyed our stay so much that we stayed a total of 3 nights. I stayed in Suite A on the top floor and my friend stayed in Suite B. The bedding, furniture and amenities are top rate. Suite A is huge with a private bedroom attached to a living room with an extra bed. This is a perfect place for couples to enjoy a romantic getaway in a secluded Thai town. They also have several bungalows back in the garden that are beautiful. The owners were very keen on receiving any constructive criticism to make our stay better. In fact, I couldn’t find much of anything to improve. This is a really well-thought out project. Even the name, Tonmai Suites describes it beautifully. It’s not really guest house and it’s not really a hotel. This place will be fully booked in the near future so a walk in that my friend and I managed to pull off will not be possible. Enjoy!
